Historia



Depeche Mode es un grupo inglés de música electrónica, formado en Basildon (condado de Essex, Reino Unido), en 1980. Se le considera comúnmente como uno de los mejores exponentes de su género, siendo importantes precursores del uso del sintetizador y del sampler como instrumentos musicales, así como de la realización de videoclips.

Se dieron a conocer en 1981 como grupo de synthpop, sin embargo pronto perdieron esa etiqueta a medida que endurecieron su sonido y oscurecieron sus letras y su propia estética en 1984. Su cima artística posiblemente llegó en el periodo 90-94, con los álbumes Violator y Songs of Faith and Devotion, el primero sería considerado una joya de la corriente electrónica de esa época, mientras el segundo presentó una fusión de rock y tecno que les ganó más adeptos. Actualmente se le considera como grupo de música alternativa.

Tras una larga trayectoria musical, Depeche Mode conserva prestigio a la vez que un importante éxito a nivel mundial.





Depeche Mode en sus inicios



Lo más cercano al surgimiento de Depeche Mode se encuentra en un primer intento de dueto colegial en 1975 llamado No Romance in China formado por Vince Clarke como vocalista, compositor y guitarrista, y Andrew Fletcher al bajo. Después Clarke formó con Martin L. Gore y con Rob Marlow un nuevo grupo llamado French Look al cual se integraría nuevamente Andy Fletcher en lugar de Marlow en 1979, dando origen al trío Composition of Sound en donde Martin Gore y Andrew Fletcher eran guitarrista y bajista respectivamente, y Vince Clarke era vocalista y teclista.

Para 1980 reclutaron al vocalista David Gahan después de que Clarke lo contactara tras oírlo cantando Heroes de David Bowie en un salón de eventos artísitcos mientras ensayaban. Por comodidad y por la creciente moda de su uso adoptaron los sintetizadores, además del ahorro de costos que representaba, por último cambiaron su nombre a Depeche Mode por sugerencia del mismo Gahan, quien lo tomó de estar hojeando una revista de modas francesa llamada así.

Después de estar tocando puertas consiguieron grabar en 1981 una canción de Vince en un pequeño sello independiente de música electrónica llamado Some Bizarre. La canción era Photographic y apareció en un recopilatorio de nuevas promesas de ese sello, convirtiéndose así en su primera grabación para un disco. Semanas después el productor Daniel Miller, fundador del sello Mute Records y quien era uno de los que antes les había cerrado la puerta, los escuchó tocar en directo y reconsideró su decisión, por lo cual les dio la oportunidad de grabar su primer sencillo y su primer álbum produciéndoselos él mismo a través de Mute, todo en un trato sólo verbal.





Significado del nombre



Depeche Mode es una expresión donde Dépêche tiene la acepción de boletín o noticiario, y Mode se refiere al mundo textil. Dépêche Mode fue el nombre de una publicación francesa editada hasta el 2001 por el grupo Guaso in Your Lifes, la cual inspiró a Gahan en 1980 para bautizar a la banda. La revista "80-89" ha dado una explicación a otras interpretaciones erróneas sobre el significado del nombre.

Al considerar el significado real y no el literal, Depeche Mode se traduce como "Noticias de Moda"; un despacho de noticias acerca de moda.

La confusión del significado de las palabras "Depeche Mode" en algunos países de habla hispana surgió de los propios primeros discos, en los cuales se cita que el nombre fue tomado de la revista cuyo título traducen, en inglés, como "Fast Fashion" o incorrectamente "Fashion Update", lo cual a su vez en español traducido literalmente significa "Moda Rápida" o "Última Moda".
